Since there are topics on MI and LAMA, i did a little research on the collective in NY...does anyone know how the school is? Anyone gone there?
Also does the fact they right down practice studio price rates and to call for private instruction mean that you dont get to practice for free and that you dont get lessons in your curriclum already? or is that like extra to what you are alotted?
Also if they are closed on sundays what are the students supposed to do? Can they practice if they want? or do the students just have to go find thrit own place to practice on sundays?

At MI practice was no problem.

I went there in the early 90's. I did a week intensive, but after day one, I was the only one there! All private lessons instead of groups. I could practice as much as I wanted.
The first day there, I was so amped, I went into a practice room with some DW's and brand new heads. I bought some Vater Fusion with the round nylon tips. I thoroughly trashed ALL the heads. Dents allover--real deep. I know they must have been real pissed, but I did't care. [img]wink.gif[/img]

The great thing about the week intensive is that you can do the NYC hang and see a lot of great jazz almost every night.
But then again, I had a private intensive so I can't really compare it to the group version. But all in all, it was awesome. Hook up with Frank Katz if he's still there.
Frank Katz is a really great player. I love that Brand X record, X Communication. FT, have you checked out his book? I am thinking about ordering it. I am really interested in his methods/concepts. BTW I like Kim Plainfield's book, as well as the Frankie Malabe one, of course!
That five day intensive sounds like a pretty sweet deal. Its like trying out the school and learning a lot at the same time.... well either way.. do you think that it was similar to the actual curriculum? Maybe you might not be able to tell since thats all you did there but I was wondering if taking it will give me a good sense of what school will be like.
Also how do they deal with the class? I mean so if I suck, then ill be holding up a lotta other better kids and theyll wanna kickme out or something?? Scary...

I've only taken private lessons there. Kim Plainfield and Michael Lauren were my favorites.
Give the school a call. It's a business...they'll provide you with all the information you need to make the sale. They can probably send you a catalog.

Other than that, I checked their website and practice time and private lessons are still part of the tuition if you pay for a program.
I can’t remember if the school was closed on Sundays, but anyways I don’t think I was there on Sundays. I was at school for 9am-9pm every other days. You need a day to do your laundry, grocery, call your GF, relax, and visit NYC; and there are many interesting outdoor concerts on the summer weekends (like Paul Simon in Central Park with Gadd, which I had the chance to see...).
Jgadd on this board also did their intensive 10-week certificate with me, and speaks highly of this place. It was in 1991, so some things may have changed.
